The best part? Alpine cardigans are venturing off the slopes and quickly becoming a go-to sweater choice for chic city folk, too. The Hale Cardigan, with its unique jacquard-print details and buttery-soft Pima cotton-alpaca blend fabric, is a no-brainer choice for those exact people, which is probably why it's already selling out at lightning speed.

Given its considerable price at $798, I felt a responsibility to try it out IRL before I recommended that others make the same personal investment I've been considering ever since I first spotted the sweater on Dôen's website. Below, read my firsthand review of the Hale Cardigan, one of winter 2026's most sought-after pieces.

How I Styled the Dôen Hale Cardigan

My Review

Immediately upon unboxing the Hale Cardigan's two available colorways, I knew I had to own at least one of them. The sweater comes in a lighter palette of oatmeal, cream, and mocha brown, as well as black, with brown and ivory accents. Both are hand-knit in Peru and made of a mix of 47% baby alpaca, 41% cotton, 8% wool, and 4% polyamide. In other words, this is no itchy sweater. It's soft and cozy—perfect for New York City winters. The shawl collar gives the knit a vintage look, as do the three faux horn buttons that are reinforced with a crochet belt that allows you to cinch the chunky silhouette right at the waist. It even has pockets that successfully fit my quite large iPhone 17 Pro Max on one side, and my Amazon Kindle on the other.

My first time wearing it, I opted for the lighter version, styling it simply with 501 Levi's, Khaite wedge-heel mules, and my favorite vintage Celine makeup-bag-turned-clutch from The Vintage Marché for a relaxed day at the office. Surprisingly, despite the cold, it kept me toasty when I went out on my lunch break without a coat on top, but inside at my desk, it didn't get too toasty, even with the heat on. Plus, I counted five different Who What Wear employees who complimented me on it or asked me where it was from.

I haven't yet tested out the black version, though I've already thought up a multitude of ways to style it, including with a white poplin skirt and some lady-like court shoes, as well as with tailored trousers and loafers, a combination that will balance out the casualness of the Alpine style. What's nice about the darker option is that the print is a touch more subtle. That, and black is always more versatile, making it easy to pair with just about anything that already exists in my wardrobe and yours.

From David Koma choosing to showcase his S/S 26 menswear line at Berlin Fashion Week to Rosalía releasing her critically acclaimed single "Berghain"—named after the city's most infamous nightclub—it would seem that all roads lead to Berlin. After travelling there, I get the hype. Not only does Berlin check off every box you'd want in a destination (historical relevance, dynamic art scene, incredible culinary talent, and nightlife that rivals no other city, New York included), but the city's budding street style scene takes the cake. Fashion in Berlin is a visual feast, or at least that's what I felt after spotting countless trends in cafés, clubs, and corners of the U-Bahn stations. It was so inspiring that I figured it was my civic duty to share eight Berlin fashion trends that I spotted locals wearing across the city. Prepare to be inspired.

1. Lots of Leather

Style Notes: It's a running joke online that the defining feature of Berlin fashion is two things: all-black outfits and lots of leather (often both worn together). Welp, after spending time in the city, I can safely report that some clichés are, in fact, clichés for a reason! I couldn't walk a city block in Berlin without spotting some variation of black leather pieces: outerwear, handbags, boots, the works. While Berliners do live and die by their all-black leather outfits, these looks are by no means boring. In proper alignment with the gritty energy of this city, you'll find that the leather pieces they put on always have a certain edge to them—think longline leather trenches that are meant to trapeze the dance floor at Tresor all night, low-slung wide-leg trousers that are sultry enough to get you into KitKat or chunky moto boots that you could rave in all night. It's an ethos that's all about making even the most mundane staples more exciting.

2. Menswear Details

Style Notes: Being that Berlin is home to some of the earliest reported movements for pioneering LGBTQ+ rights, it's fitting that the city's street style scene still reflects a desire to subvert traditional gender norms in society. That's no more apparent than with all the menswear-inspired details that seemingly dominated every street corner. No matter their age, fashion people there were donning androgynous separates in a way that felt, well, utterly revolutionary. Style Notes: Aligning with that ethos of embracing androgynous style, there was another trend that seemed inescapable on my trip: oversize denim. From jean jackets that were two sizes too big to loosely fitted denim button-down shirts to ultra-baggy barrel-leg jeans, it seemed that everyone in the city collectively decided you could create an eye-catching ensemble without even having to touch a pair of low-rise or skinny jeans (thank god for that realization). But beyond the edgy tomboy aesthetic that extremely oversize denim creates, it's also one of the most effective ways to dress practically for Berlin's brutal winters—the shape lets you layer thermal layers underneath to stay warm without sacrificing your style.

Style Notes: Speaking of cold weather, we have to talk about its not-so-subtle impact on fashion trends in the city. Given Berlin's cold climate, layering would, of course, be a signature part of residents' sartorial diet. But like all things in Berlin, what makes this capital distinct is that people don't do things normally; they do things to the max. The clearest example of this "more is more" ethos is the embrace of excessive layers. Of course, there are still some caveats to this styling trend, as there weren't necessarily examples of Berliners buying into every print that's popular on the runway right now. Instead, there was a greater focus on incorporating grungier options, like leopard or plaid. The latter was one of the more prominent prints I spotted on my trip, as plenty of people in Berlin wore plaid separates to add edge to their evergreen outfit formulas—e.g., printed skirts were often layered over ultra-baggy jeans, or plaid flannels peeked out from beneath oversize outerwear. By adding plaid to the mix this way, it's further proof that Berliners are among the most stylish people.

Style Notes: Beyond printed pieces, accessories also seem to play a pivotal role in Berlin's street style scene. No matter the location, I could always count on finding a "questionable" statement accessory within sight that only really makes sense in this city. Sporty sunglasses on the dance floor? Typical Berlin. Baker caps in the halls of a gallery? Totally normal. But belt bags in the U-Bahn stations? Admittedly, that was the biggest surprise to spot in the wild, only because this bag trend looked so different from the variations in other cities. The trend was quickly picked up by style crowds in New York, London, Paris, and of course, Berlin. But it's not just about throwing on any old pair of kicks, because, hey, this is Berlin, baby! You need a pair of sneakers that is as subversive as this city and maybe even sort of, well, ugly. The style crowd here isn't afraid to take risks, which is why you'll find them wearing some of the season's most controversial shoe trends—whether that means a pair of gorpcore-inspired hiking sneakers, hybrid ballet sneakers, or even mid-calf high-top boxing sneakers. For residents of this city, it's not just about embracing functionality; it's about using something as superfluous as "ugly" sneakers to rage against society's traditions.

Style Notes: Last but certainly not least, there was another accessory trend that I couldn't walk a block in Berlin without spotting: headgear galore. Hats! Headbands! Hair clips! Oh my. No hair accessory was off-limits, which I love because it seemed less about incorporating the season's coolest hat style or even covering a bad hair day, and more about leaning fully into the Berlin aesthetic. You can see this in the type of headgear most prevalent among people in the city: vintage-inspired baker caps that felt like a nod to the city's complex history, grommet-covered headbands that lean grunge, silver hair clips that feel Charli XCX inspired, and even androgynous baseball caps. Each hair accessory was not only a nod to what makes this city unique but proof of the commitment that the style crowd has to showing off their personality from head to toe. It's ultimately the best example of why you should consider visiting Berlin over other fashion capitals. But even if you can't personally rationalize a trip right now, adopting a few extra hair accessories, or really any of these winter trends, will expand your worldview (and your wardrobe).

Instead of going modern, the designers looked at 1960s ski and alpine culture, referencing old films, catalogues, and early ski communities. "Movies like Downhill Racer with Robert Redford or Charade with Audrey Hepburn, along with early 1970s ski styles, such as sweaters, balaclavas, and cowboy boots, helped define an aesthetic that feels enduring and powerful," she explains. "That sense of tradition and community aligns closely with how we think about American style, which made this partnership feel very natural."

Given that J.Crew's role in the collaboration is as U.S. Ski & Snowboard's official lifestyle apparel partner, Gayot was adamant not to try to get too technical with the collection. Instead, she looked at her own slope-side experience as a Canadian who has been skiing since she was a kid, and the environment surrounding the beloved winter activity, "including how people dress, and how that style translates beyond the mountain." As a result, the pieces in the first drop make for an ideal mountain wardrobe, as evidenced by the numerous instances I personally spotted them at both hotspot restaurants and sporting-related events all around Aspen this weekend.

For tips on how to style them all, follow Gayot on Instagram. She's already shown off a multitude of inspiring options for everything from the office to the chalet. "You can wear them with jeans, a belt, and cowboy boots, or layer them under ski gear on the mountain," she tells me. "That flexibility is key—each piece can live throughout the ski season in different ways, and when you pull it out next year, it will still feel timeless, nostalgic, and rooted in heritage."

Styling Inspo

The versatility of the collection isn't the only reason it's selling out like crazy; commenters under the brand's Instagram posts from this weekend are already begging for restocks, despite the collection going live just days ago, on January 8. Its authenticity to ski and snowboard culture is another explanation for its widespread appeal. One athlete that I spoke to at the pop-up, 19-year-old halfpipe skier Izzy Worthington, told me that it reminded her of the old U.S. team gear from the 1990s—gear her dad, 1994 Winter Olympics freestyle skier, Trace Worthington, wore when he competed and passed down to her. "It's super cool seeing that again," she said.

The Campaign

To keep up with the 26-piece collection's vintage aesthetic, J.Crew released a now-viral campaign video, titled "Alpine People," starring athletes to watch from the Stifel U.S. Ski Team and Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team, including free skiers Colby Stevenson and Rell Harwood, freestyle moguls skier Tess Johnson, slope-style snowboarder Hailey Langland, alpine ski racer River Radamus, and Paralympic snowboarder Zach Miller. Each took on a persona, from Harwood's "Après Aficionado" to Stevenson's "The Gear Head." Everything from the voiceover to the background music to Harwood's goggle tan lines and, of course, the clothes, had a noticeably retro feel to it, as if the short film were shot in the same era that Gayot and Babenzien used as inspiration for the collection's designs. The entire campaign was shot in the mountains of Austria, a fitting landscape for some of this generation's most talked-about talents in the world of professional skiing and snowboarding to show off the most talked-about collaboration of 2026 so far.

I checked into every fashion person's favorite stay, Hotel Jerome, Auberge Collection. It was the perfect base for everything that Aspen has to offer. The best part of any ski trip, however, is the wardrobe, and as someone who has gone skiing nearly every winter since I was 5, I like to think I've mastered what to pack for a stylish and functional ski trip. As much as Aspen is a ski resort town at its core, let's face it: It's also far more stylish than the average resort town. To match the mood, I brought along retro ski suits, statement sunglasses, vintage fur, and plenty of Western details like fringe and suede.

Here, take a look at everything I packed for a three-day itinerary that included skiing Aspen Highlands, lunch at the famed Cloud Nine, snowmobiling at T-Lazy-7 Ranch, and dinner at The Snow Lodge.

The pièce de résistance of my alpine wardrobe was none other than FP Movement's Downhill Diva Suit, a ski jumpsuit with a slim-leg and cinched-waist silhouette. The team informed me that it was modeled after a one-piece that Princess Diana wore throughout the '80s. I opted for the white, but after seeing how some of the other content creators on the trip styled the cherry red, I might need it next.

Styling it was seamless. I kept it simple and opted for a long-sleeve top and leggings as my base layer.

For lunch and a sceney champagne spray at Cloud Nine Bistro, I unzipped my ski suit to reveal my alpine-inspired printed base layers. I love how the top has thumbholes to keep my wrists insulated on the slopes too. Both pieces are compressive, but I'd recommend sizing down for a snug fit.

I set aside my ski suit in favor of ski separates for an afternoon of snowmobiling. The star of the show was, undoubtedly, these Chill Factor Leggings that feature a graphic stripe down each side. I liked that their fitted silhouette was a chicer alternative to traditional (and often bulkier) ski pants. I styled them with a matching red top and the Mountain High Half Zip.

For a cozy breakfast at Bear Den followed by a morning of shopping at the boutiques along the main streets of town, I layered up in the Alpine Faux Fur Half Zip, an incredibly fluffy pullover sweater, over the So Fly Henley, a snap-up funnel-neck tee.

Leaning into Western motifs is basically a nonnegotiable when dressing for Aspen, and this checkered button-down shirt was a hero item in my suitcase. I tried the viral Ralph tuck by layering it over a sheer turtleneck with most of the buttons undone and finished off the Americana vibe with a suede belt and pair of rigid denim.

Flying in and out of Aspen is no easy feat, as the journey includes at least one layover. For both my travel days, I wore the Go To Set, a pair of wide-leg sweatpants and a chic little boatneck long-sleeve top to match. It was so comfy but still looked put-together and effortless.

For dinner at Matsuhisa's buzzy Aspen outpost, I styled a brown suede jacket with fringe trim and my favorite relaxed cashmere sweater.

If you know me, you know I look forward to winter in NYC because I get to wear my collection of sheer tights—especially the brown ones (a detail those who know me really well are aware of). If they weren't paired with dresses or skirts, the tights were worn as leggings, with nothing layered over them, just sweaters or blouses, and directional outerwear on top.

Cashmere tights are the definition of winter elegance. Compared to sheer tights, they're incredibly soft, naturally insulating, and have a refined finish. Plus, the thick texture adds a unique layer of depth and interest, instantly elevating the simplest winter outfits. That said, if you have sensitive skin and cashmere makes you itch, this trend might not be your favorite.
